"From 1964 with the series of "Boxes", Gérard Schlosser introduced the use of color in his work which had been limited to black and white since his discovery of Beckett's play, "Waiting for Godot", 1953. His painting then became figurative. He juxtaposed disparate everyday objects (questioning consumer society, comparable to Warhol's "Brillo Boxes" and Arman's studio "Pubelles" which also date from 1964), and pieces of anatomy, here a woman's bust. This series, an essential milestone in the evolution of Schlosser's work, contains the germ of a state of his painting to come: the close-up of an anatomical part where the detail becomes the primordial element of the painting in relation to the surroundings which are only there to situate the intimate scene very often as indicated by framing and zoom."
