Ismael Nery is a Brazilian painter, one of the precursors of Brazilian modernism, influenced by expressionism, cubism and surrealism. In 1927, he made a trip to Europe, where he came into contact with Marc Chagall, whose work left his mark, and other surrealists. His work is also marked by the metaphysical influence of Giorgio de Chirico and the cubism of Pablo Picasso. His favorite themes are always linked to the human figure: portraits, self-portraits and nudes. He is not interested in national, indigenous and Afro-Brazilian themes. He died in 1934, at the age of thirty-three, in Rio de Janeiro, at a time when his notoriety beyond the circle of connoisseurs was still emerging. His work was forgotten by the public and critics until the 1960s, when his name was inscribed on the 8th São Paulo Biennale, in the room dedicated to surrealism and fantastic art.
