Seduced by the beauty of the iconic Star Wars scene in which Harrison Ford appears petrified by carbonite, Richard Orlinski is also fascinated by the spatio-temporal questions raised by this hibernation. Could life be suspended? How long… for eternity? Could we live again after being frozen?
He decides to sculpt his full-length self-portrait, a bas-relief stuck in the material, prisoner of the bronze, both hands forward to resist. The struggle between the body and the solidifying matter is perceptible. The background, like a molten metal, is animated by movement, but life is frozen there. From this tension are born the strength and the beauty of this work.
